What this category decides: condensation off furniture.

What this actually decides

A cold glass in a warm room pulls water out of the air and onto its own outside surface, and that water runs down and pools under the base. On a sealed kitchen counter it does not matter. On a wooden table it lifts the finish, and the ring it leaves is permanent long before anyone notices it forming.

The distinction worth understanding is between intercepting the water and absorbing it. A silicone or plastic coaster stops the water reaching the table and leaves it standing on the coaster, where it sticks to the base of the glass and gets knocked. Ceramic, stone and wood take it in and release it back to the air, so the coaster is dry again by the time anyone picks the glass up. For long cold drinks — which is most of what this site makes — the absorbent kind is doing a job the other kind is not.

Lifespan and care

Silicone effectively lasts indefinitely and stains very little. Ceramic and stone last until dropped, and they stain progressively from coffee and fruit — which is cosmetic rather than functional, since a stained absorbent coaster absorbs exactly as well as a clean one. Wood is the shortest-lived here, because repeated wetting eventually swells and marks it.

  • Let absorbent coasters dry fully between uses rather than stacking them damp in the holder.
  • Wipe silicone coasters out after long drinks — the tray holds water that otherwise sits there until next time.
  • Keep wood coasters away from the dishwasher entirely; heat and standing water are what ruins them.
  • Scrub stains on ceramic and stone with a paste of baking soda and water rather than bleach, which the porous surface will hold onto.
  • Put the holder where people walk out of the drinks station, not where the drinks are made. Coasters get taken if they are on the route.

Questions people actually ask

For long cold drinks, yes. A barrier coaster stops the water reaching the table but leaves it standing, where it sticks to the base of the glass and comes up with it. An absorbent one takes the water in and gives it back to the air, so the surface is dry again by the time the glass is lifted.

Surface tension in the film of water sitting between the two. It is the standard failure of non-absorbent coasters, and it is what non-stick surfaces on some silicone sets are specifically addressing. Absorbent materials sidestep it by not leaving a film there in the first place.

Coasters scale with places to put a glass down rather than with guests. Six covers a household comfortably; hosting wants eight or more, because the moment there is not one free somebody uses the table. Above about two dozen you have run out of surfaces, not coasters.

Check the listing — some sets state hot and cold, others only mention cold. Absorbent ceramic and stone handle heat without trouble; some silicone and plastic sets are only rated for cold, and a hot mug on the wrong material is how you get a mark on the coaster instead of the table.

A paste of baking soda and water, left on for a while and then rinsed, lifts most of it. Avoid bleach: a porous surface holds it, and you will smell it in the next drink that sits there. It is worth saying that a stained absorbent coaster works exactly as well as a clean one.
